On Thursday, my FIK mom buddies Tomiko and Reiko took me leaf
peeping Iwate-style. We saw some great foliage, a huge lava flow with columnar
basalt, several hot springs, and ate some yummy food. We had wood fired pizza
and imoni- a fall taro & meat stew common in Tohoku, for lunch followed by
ice cream from the locally famous Matsubokkuri (Pine Cone Ice Cream). Matsubokkuri
makes their own ice cream in many traditional Japanese flavors. I tasted ‘sesame
seed’, ‘cheese’, ‘salt’, and ‘mountain grape’ ice cream for the first time.
They were all pretty tasty! It was a fun morning and we are all looking forward
to our next mom’s morning out!
