Gandai Festival

Andy’s students spent the weekend working at the Gandai Festival at Iwate University. The festival consisted of several dozen booths with different student groups (clubs, international students, etc.) selling food. We went to the festival for lunch on Sunday, since we were out of town playing all day Saturday. Unfortunately, Sunday was a cold, wet day. That didn’t deter the Earlham group though! They worked hard all weekend and sold over 550 rice crispy treats!!! At 100¥ each, they made a lot of money! After spending a little of it to attend the festival after part, they donated the proceeds to the village of Tanohata, which was heavily damaged by the 2011 tsunami.

In spite of the huge amount of delicious food being sold at the festival, after eating a couple of lamb kebobs, Catie decided what she wanted most was an ice cream cone out of the vending machine on campus!
